Our heritage
Formerly known as 'Van Rietschoten & Houwens' and Imtech Marine
1860
The beginning of a legacy
In 1860, sea captain Jan Jacob van Rietschoten took leave of his career at sea and established himself in Rotterdam as an independent supplier of rigging and marine equipment.
1955
Innovation with semiconductors
Rietschoten & Houwens was one of the first to apply semiconductors on board seagoing vessels. Semiconductors enabled much faster communication and calculations than traditional analogue and mechanical systems.
1990
Pioneer in the development of ECDIS
To improve navigational security at sea, Van Rietschoten & Houwens developed Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS). This system later became the standard for international maritime operations.
2012
First ever certified hybrid system
The design and installation of the first hybrid battery system for an ocean-going vessel. Scottish operator CMAL's MV Hallaig was the first ship to receive a hybrid system and acted as a benchmark for the feasibility of hybrid systems on board ships.
2015
Key partner in crew & automation consortium for the Royal Navy
The Royal Netherlands Navy, TNO, Thales and RH Marine have presented a long-term vision of the strategic ambitions of naval operations at sea. This partnership is a platform from which many pioneering maritime innovations will follow in the coming years.
2020
Introduction of the first marine-certified virtualised system architecture
The Integrated Virtualised System Architecture replaces traditional network architecture and improves ship connectivity, maintainability and cybersecurity. The revolutionary system has been awarded the renowned wheelmark and is expected to bring many benefits in the near future.
2050
Towards a promising future
The foundation of technological innovation laid by Van Rietschoten & Houwens is still alive and well within RH Marine. We are proud of our rich and passionate history in which we were at the cradle of many innovations that are still used in the maritime industry today.
Since our establishment in 1860, we have been at the forefront of the technological development of this sector, and we intend to remain so well into the future.
